First collected edition of Thomas Hardy's novels. Seventeen volumes. 8vo. Each In the publisher's blue-green cloth, lettered gilt to the spines with Hardy's insignia in gilt the the upper covers. Top edges gilt. A very good set indeed, with a little wear to the spine ends of a couple volumes.
The Wessex Novels was the first attempt to collect Hardy's prose work in a uniform edition, preceding Macmillan's Wessex edition of 1912-4, and the Mellstock edition of 1919-20. It includes the first editions of Jude The Obscure (which is in the first state) and The Well-Beloved.
