The Woodlanders
Macmillan, 1887.
First edition. Publisher's secondary binding of dark green, pebble grained cloth, ruled in black to the upper covers with titles in gilt to the spine. A fine copy, bright and crisp with the front hinges to vols II and III starting to split, but internally very fresh. Bookplates of Jacob Bromley, George Barr McCutcheon and E.E.Taylor to front pastedown.
Purdy suggests that this is a remainder binding consisting of 170 copies of the he first edition which were not bound up from the initial printing of 1000 copies. Examination of the text confirms it is identical to the primary binding. The Woodlanders was referred to by Hardy as "his best and his own favourite among his novels" (Purdy).
