First edition. 8vo. Original lilac cloth with gilt titles and design to the spine and upper cover, in the original pictorial dustwrapper. All edges gilt. Six colour plates and numerous steel engravings by Henry Ford. A fine copy, with the covers still retaining their light lilac and only slight fading to the spine, in a very good dustwrapper which shows a some light chipping to the head of the spine and some general fraying to the edges and corners
The last of Lang's coloured fairy books is notoriously difficult to find in nice condition due its light and extremely fugitive colour, which almost inevitably fades to white which then has a propensity to grubbiness. The presence of the dustwrapper, itself exceptionally uncommon, means that the cloth remains close to its original state.
The fairy stories come from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Portugal, Scandinavia and India.
