First edition. 4to. Grey cloth with Art Nouveau style decoration and lettering in black. Top edge gilt and other page edges untrimmed. Sixteen tipped in colour plates and 24 full page black and white plates, plus numerous smaller black and white drawings. A near fine copy, with some light spotting, otherwise uncommonly clean and bright. Neat contemporary gift inscription to the front free endpaper.
One of Clarke's most sought after works the illustrations in this book are quite spectacular, the colour plates have a feel of Kay Nielsen to them, whilst the black and white images are very reminiscent of the work of Aubrey Beardsley.
