Traveller and naturalist Richard Gordon Smith spent time in Japan, where he recorded ancient Japanese myths and legends in "voluminous illustrated diaries", which also detailed his travels, sporting endeavours and experiences. During his time in Japan he sent interesting plants and animals back to the British Museum, some of which were named after him.
