Down and Out in Paris and London
Harper & Brothers, 1933.
First American edition. Original pale purple cloth, with a purple vignette to the upper cover and the spine stamped with nine broad stripes in purple, in the pictorial dustwrapper, with like design to pictorial endpapers. A fine copy, in a near fine dustwrapper, with some minor wear to the spine ends and corners and just a touch of the habitual fading to the spine. Housed in a custom made cloth slipcase.
Published six months after the English edition, the American edition of Orwell's first book received generally good reviews, but sold poorly, with 383 copies of the original print run of 1,750 being remaindered. The scarcity of copies made the book hard to obtain in Orwell's own lifetime and he was unable to furnish Henry Miller with a copy, writing to him in 1936 "I haven't one left and it is out of print, and I was going to send you a copy of the French translation... yes, it was published in America too but didn't sell a great deal." (Life in Letters)
Uncommon with a dustwrapper in as nice condition as this.
