Swallows and Amazons
Cape, 1938.
First edition to be illustrated by Arthur Ransome (fourteenth printing). 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering in the pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial endpapers. Illustrated in line throughout by the author. A very good book, some foxing, in a good dustwrapper, which has some chipping to the spine ends and corners.
One of 2000 copies. Originally Cape had engaged Stephen Spurrier to provide the illustrations for Ransome's story, but Ransome disliked them so much that the first edition of the tale was published in 1930 without the drawings accompanying it. The mantle was then taken up by Clifford Webb, but again Ransome was dissatisfied with the result and in 1938 it was decided that he would add the illustrations himself. His dustjacket design is one with which we have become very familiar, reproducing a collage of small scenes and vignettes from within the book.
PROVENANCE: From the collection of John Cowen, Ransome collector and scholar.
