With clear parallels to the recent Watergate scandal, The New York Times published a review of The Abbess on 20 October 1974 - "it is a pleasure to see that at least one writer has not been taken in by the self-serving solemnities of the journalists and politicians. Muriel Spark is the first writer to demonstrate that Watergate and its attendant immoralities are materials not of tragedy, but of farce."
