First edition. 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and vignettes. All edges blue. Forty tipped in colour plates mounted onto brown art paper under captioned tissue guards. A very good copy indeed, one plate with small snag to lower edge, all others perfect.
With a brilliant sense of colour, a high sense of style, and influenced by Japanese water-colour techniques, Goble was the perfect choice for illustrating tales of the Far East. These stories, chosen by Grace James, "have been selected from the Ko-ji-ki, or Record of Ancient Matters which contains the mythology of Japan...
