The Satanic Verses was deemed to be against Islam, the Prophet and the Koran, causing the late Ayatollah Khomeini to issue a fatwa on its author, declaring him an enemy of Islam whose blood should be shed, causing Rushdie to go into hiding for almost twelve years.
