Original Woodcuts by Various Artists
Omega Workshops Ltd, 1918.
First (and sole) edition. Number 52 of 75 copies. Publisher's hand printed purple, patterned wrappers over board. Title page vignette and fourteen woodcuts over twelve pages, with captions on the facing pages, by Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, McKnight Kauffer and others. A very good copy indeed with a little wear to the spine and corners, but much better than usually encountered.
Omega Workshops, conceived by Roger Fry, but founded on a communal basis by members of the Bloomsbury Group in 1913, was an art and design partnership for artists to design, produce and sell their own works. The workshop produced stained glass, textiles, pottery and furniture as well as paintings and hand printed books.
The Workshops were naturally closely associated with The Hogarth Press and shared most of the same core of participants and followers. Despite critical praise and a small band of devoted customers, the Workshops was never a financial success and by 1919 had ceased production. The publications of the Workshops' press, of which there were four, this being by far the most significant, are very rare, particularly in good condition.
