Decline and Fall
Chapman & Hall, 1974.
Reprint of the 1962 Revised Edition, in which the text reverts to the author's original, prior to cuts and emendation required by his publishers for the first edition. Anthony Powell's copy, annotated throughout noting differences between the first edition and this, so noted by Powell on the front endpaper. Six full page line drawings by the author. No dustwrapper, a fine copy.
Powell and Waugh, two of the most significant novelists of the twentieth century, were contemporaries at Oxford and close friends for the rest of Waugh's life. Powell had introduced Waugh to the publisher of his first book (a biography of Rossetti), although Waugh was forced to find another publisher for Decline and Fall. He gave Powell a copy of the first edition inscribed, "To Tony, who rescued the author from worse than Death". Powell seems to have compared this copy, acquired long after Waugh death, to the first edition annotating differences on some twenty pages.
PROVENANCE: From the library of Anthony Powell, bookplate to front pastedown.
