First edition. 8vo. Original green cloth with gilt lettering on the upper cover and spine in pictorial dustwrapper. Pictorial endpapers and many black and white drawings by the author. The book is bright and clean with a very slight lean, neat owner's name on the half title and corresponding bookplate. The pictorial dustwrapper is clean and bright with very slight rubs to the corners. A near fine book in a near fine dustwrapper.
The first recipient of the Carnegie Medal, which is now awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children.
