HAND COLOURED BY GLORIA CARDEW
Goblin Market
Macmillan, 1893.
First edition illustrated by Housman and the first single appearance of the poem which was originally published as part of a collection of poems. 12mo. Original green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt. All edges gilt. Illustrated title page, 12 full page illustrations and numerous line drawings by Housman. This copy with hand colouring by Gloria Cardew, with Cardew's printed identification label on the front pastedown. A very good copy indeed, with only light rubs to the gilt.
One of Housman's earliest forays into book illustration and probably the work for which he is best known. The images are reminiscent of the poem's previous illustrator, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, but with their fresh approach have perhaps become those illustrations most associated with this poem. This copy made unique by the hand colouring of Gloria Cardew, a pre-eminent hand colourist, frequently employed by the Women Guild of Bookbinders.
