This renowned publication continues to lead the key resources regarding the study of the temple and Egyptology up to the present day. The great temple of Abydos is regarded as one of the most important structures in the region, originally constructed as a tribute to King Seti I (father to Ramses II) and a sacred site honouring the legacy of past Pharaohs. The temple houses seven chapels each dedicated to the pharaohs and six gods: Ptah, Re-Horakhty, Amun-Re, Osiris, Isis and Horus. These dedicated temples serve as an essential resource for studying ancient Egyptian religion, as they preserve the earliest complete representation of the daily spiritual rituals of ancient Egypt.
Each volume contains an initial introduction by Sir Alan H. Gardiner, an illustrious linguist and Egyptologist. His commencement of each volumes enhances the illustrations by providing linguistic, historic, technical and spacial context to the plates.
