Images of War
George Allen and Unwin, 1919.
First edition. Grey paper boards with gilt titles and borders to the upper cover and in brown to spine, fore-edge untrimmed. From the library of Siegfried Sassoon. A very good copy, with some tanning to the spine and wear to the tail, internally fresh.
Seigfried Sassoon's copy of one of the key collections of WWI poetry. Aldington was sent to the front as a private in 1916, where he was gassed, later returning as an officer until demobilisation in 1919. Throughout the period he wrote poetry as a distraction from the traumatic events he witnessed, vividly capturing the horrors of war.
Another work of the same title was published in the same year by the Beaumont Press with illustrations by Paul Nash, but contains only half the number of poems, including some which do not appear in this volume, so is essentially a different work.
PROVENANCE: Siegfried Sassoon (posthumous bookplate to front pastedown).
