Genesis Chaprs XXVII, XXXVIII, XL
A Highlight of Mid-Victorian Book Illustration
The History of Joseph and His Brethren Genesis Chaprs XXVII, XXXVIII, XL
Day & Son, 1865.
First edition. 4to. Publisher's red cloth, elaborately decorated in blue and gilt, lettered in gilt. Twenty six full page chromolithograph illustrations, opposite pages of text from the bible printed in black and red on a gold background, both text and illustrations within elaborate decorative borders, and printed on heavy card stock. A very good copy, stain to the upper cover and some wear to the edges.
A wonderful example of Victorian chromolithography at its very best by one of the masters of the art form. Jones helped pioneer modern colour theory and his theories on flat patterning and ornament still resonate with contemporary designers today.
PROVENANCE: Bookplate of George Fleming, noted British collector of children's books, to front pastedown.
