A History of the Fishes of the British Islands
Groombridge & Sons, 1862.
First edition. Four volumes. 4to. Original blue cloth, with gilt lettering and decoration on the spine and gilt vignette of fish on the upper cover. Design stamped in blind on upper and lower boards. 252 chromolithograph plates, from drawings by the author, under tissue guards. A very good set indeed. The gilt and cloth remain bright with a little rubbing to the edges. Ownership inscriptions to all volumes, bookplates to the pastedown of volumes II - IV, newspaper cutting pasted to endpaper of vol. III. Internally generally clean and bright. Overall a very nice set of an important work, scarce in original cloth.
Jonathan Couch was a noted Victorian naturalist, specialising in ichthyology.
