RARE ORIGINAL DUSTWRAPPER
Stories From the Pentamerone Translated from Neapolitan dialect by J.E. Taylor.
Macmillan, 1911.
First edition, first issue. 4to. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt and with a gilt vignette to the upper cover, in the blue pictorial dustwrapper. All edges green. Thirty-two beautiful colour plates are in rich colours and are all protected by captioned tissue guards. Includes some fairy images. A fine copy, cloth and gilt very bright, with some light foxing to the preliminary leaves, in a very good dustwrapper which is a little worn at the spine ends, strengthened with tape to the verso.
The fairy tales in this volume were collected and published by Neapolitan Giambattista Basile in the 17th century. The stories had a Europe-wide influence, and were an acknowledged source for both Charles Perrault, and the Brothers Grimm. Strongly influenced by Oriental art, Goble's illustrations are extremely subtle and very charming.
