En Sept Volumes
Nouveau Larousse Illustré En Sept Volumes
Librairie Larousse, 1898.
Eight volumes, including the supplementary volume. 4to. Publisher's quarter green morocco over green cloth boards, lettered in gilt to the spines and elaborately decorated in blind to spine and boards. 153 colour plates and maps by various artists including Millot, Avril and Dessertenne, and numerous line drawings throughout. A very good set, spines uniformly faded and a touch of wear to the corners of some of the volumes. Internally clean. The supplementary volume bound without the 'legumes' plate. Bookplates to front pastedowns. A handsome set.
A beautifully illustrated encyclopaedic dictionary featuring illustrated entries on everything from crustaceans to Victor Hugo, Nouveau Larousse Illustré was compiled by Larousse' successor Claude Augé as a scaled-down version of Larousse's earlier "Grand Dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle", adorned with illustrations throughout to both break up the text and draw the attention of casual readers.
