The Odyssey of Homer
Sir Emery Walker, Wilfred Merwin, Bruce Rogers, 1932.
First edition, one of 530 copies. Original publisher's black niger morocco with raised bands and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Twenty-six Homeric roundels printed in gold and black to title page and chapter headings. A near fine copy of a beautifully produced book, with a couple of trivial scuffs to the boards.
Lawrence's famous translation of Homer's great epic, described by in his Translator's Note as "the oldest book worth reading for its story, and the first novel of Europe". Although Lawrence plays down his own scholarship, his translation met with critical approval, particularly for its authenticity. The book is also notable for its fine production, bringing together the talents of Sir Emery Walker, typeface designer and co-founder of the Doves Press and Bruce Rogers, the book designer.
