First edition. Four volumes. 8vo. Original burgundy cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, and gilt armorial design on the upper covers. Author's presentation set, inscribed in each volume to F.R.Pelly and dated on publication. Each volume profusely illustrated with photogravures, facsimiles of documents, plans and maps. A near fine set, bright and crisp with some fading to the spine.
Churchill's monumental biography of his ancestor The Duke of Marlborough, which was almost a decade in the making. Each of the four volumes were published separately, in 1933, 1934, 1936 and 1938 respectively meaning that integral sets inscribed to the same recipient throughout are seldom encountered. In this case each inscription is dated within a few days of publication.
