Japanese Topsyturvydom

[HASEGAWA] / PATTON, Emily S.

[HASEGAWA] Japanese Topsyturvydom

Hasegawa, 1896.

First edition. Japanese crepe book. 20cm x 16.5cm. Illustrations in colour throughout this book accompany text which ridicules Western misconceptions about Japanese life and culture. A very good copy indeed, upper cover with some foxing, else bright and crisp.

Emily Patton was born in England, but became resident in Japan in 1889. She encourages readers to free themselves of "narrow-minded prejudice" and try not to impose Western views on "the habits, manners and customs of these people."
Chapter headings include: Books and Writing; Food and Table Etiquette; Social and Domestic Habits and Japanese Gardens.
