Tombleson's Thames
Tombleson & Comp., 1834.
First edition, first issue with engraved title page listing Tombleson as publisher and dedication to Baron Brougham. Quarto. Contemporary half brown calf over marbled paper boards, with gilt titles to the spine. Engraved title page depicting 'The Source of the Thames' and 79 other full page steel engravings of views on the Thames protected by tissue guards. Lacks map issued with some copies. A very good copy with a little wear to the corners and more meaningful wear to the surface of the marbled boards with a little loss of paper. Internally, mostly clean with occasional foxing.
The first edition of Tombleson's Thames, described in William Bent's Literary Adviser as being "fairly considered the only and most complete work of this important river", is uncommon as a first issue.
