The Great Gatsby
Scribners, New York, 1925.
First edition, first issue. Original dark green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine and in blind on the upper cover, in rare pictorial dustwrapper after Francis Cugat. A fine copy in a very good dustwrapper indeed, which is bright and clean, and importantly entirely unrestored. Just minor wear to the spine ends and corners, with some marks and abrasions to the verso of the dustwrapper. An exceptionally well preserved example of the famously rare and fragile dustwrapper.
The author's highlight and perhaps the single most significant work of American literature to come from the twentieth century. Cyril Connolly, in his 100 Key Books of the modern movement, describes it as "a prose poem of delight and sadness which has by now introduced two generations to the romance of America, as Huckleberry Finn and Leaves of Grass introduced those before it".
The pictorial dustwrapper designed by Cugat depicting a woman's face above the amusement park at night scene, has become legendary in its own right. It had apparently been commissioned months before the book was completed and Fitzgerald was so enamoured of the haunting image that he wrote a scene around it. It has since become one of the most recognisable of all dustwrapper designs as well as one of the most difficult to acquire in a good unrepaired state.
