Originally published in 1852, Graziella quickly became a part of the French popular culture and is generally considered to be a novel that must be read to understand the development of emotionalism in French literature. Ivy Jacquier's line drawings in this Nonesuch edition perfectly capture Lamartine's delicate analysis of his own emotional responses.
