First edition. 8vo. Maroon cloth embossed with gilt lettering and decoration. Top edge gilt. Pictorial title page and twenty black and white plates by C.E. Brock. A very good copy indeed, with a trace of wear to the spine ends and corners, but generally bright and clean. Contemporary gift inscription to the front pastedown and a short marginal tear to one plate, but internally fresh. A well preserved copy of a book seldom encountered in nice condition.
Nesbit's most enduring work and a classic of that most fertile period for children's literature at the beginning of the twentieth century. The book has been adapted for stage and screen on numerous occasions most famously in 1970 staring Jenny Agutter.
