WILD, Frank Shackleton's Last Voyage The Story of the Quest. From the Official Journal and Private Diary kept by Dr. A.H. Macklin

Cassell & Co. Ltd., 1923.

First edition. Large 8vo. Original blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and in black on the upper cover, ship vignettes on the spine and upper cover. Pictorial endpapers. Coloured frontis of The Cairn (Shackleton's grave), fifty further plates with over 100 black and white photographs, twelve sketch maps in the text. A fine copy, exceptionally bright and almost entirely free from wear. Internally fresh and clean throughout. A superior copy.

Frank Wild is frequently referred to as Shackleton's "right hand man" or the "loyal lieutenant" though he was much more than this. He played a significant role in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, joining Shackleton on each of his four expeditions, as well as joining Mawson's Aurora expedition in 1911. No one else was so involved and no other explorer spent so long in Antarctica.
The narrative is derived from the diaries kept by Shackleton, Alexander Macklin and James Marr, but also includes "Wild's personal poignant remarks on Shackleton's 1914-17 expedition". Examples in as beautiful condition as the present example are most uncommon.
