Den Norske Sydpolsfaerd Med Fram 1910-1912
THE ATTAINMENT OF THE SOUTH POLE
Sydpolen Den Norske Sydpolsfaerd Med Fram 1910-1912
Jacob Dybwads Forlag, 1912.
First edition. Two volumes, 8vo. In the publisher's attractive blue pictorial cloth, with a design of penguins surrounding an inset photograph with coloured flags (Rosove variant d). Lettered in gilt, with further decoration in gilt to the spine. All edges marbled. Extensively illustrated, with forty full-page plates and 306 further illustrations in the text. Three large maps to rear of volume two, and three smaller sketch maps. A beautiful, fine set, the cloth clean and the gilt bright, with none of the usual wear. A very small closed tear to one of the maps in Vol. II.
A beautiful set of Amundsen's account of his attainment of the Pole, written and published before the fate of Scott and his men was known. The lavishly decorated binding is an indication of the celebration of Amundsen's achievement, standing in contrast to the more utilitarian design used for the English edition later that year.
This set is in the uncommon variant binding of smooth cloth, with the coloured Norwegian flag to the inset photograph, and contains the binder's blank leaf at the front of each volume. Rare in such fine condition.
"Amundsen's modest account of his extraordinary South Pole exploit is a classic in the exploration literature" (Rosove).
