First illustrated edition of this delightful tale. 8vo. Quarter cloth over paper boards in pictorial dustwrapper with a wraparound colour scene by Lawrence, in matching publisher's slipcase. Illustrated in colour and line by John Lawrence. Fold out map of the rabbits' journey to the rear. A near fine copy, hint of tanning to the spine, in a very good slipcase.
Lawrence thought that "the opportunity to take on the first illustrated edition of Richard Adams's Watership Down was a difficult challenge but one not to be missed. For a period of two months, Lawrence was out in the Berkshire countryside with his sketchbook, making notes for a splendid book which was issued with black and white drawings, two-colour and full-colour illustrations."
