Lithographed frontispiece, additional lithographed title page, and two further lithographed plates, all after Snow. Folding lithographed map showing the route of the voyage to the rear. A fine copy. The cloth is uncommonly clean and bright and the interior is entirely free from the foxing this book is prone to. One section slightly pround. An exceptional copy.
Snow's first book, based on his journal for the 1850 expedition aboard the Prince Albert in search of Sir John Franklin's fated lost expedition of 1845-8. He writes in his introduction that he came over to Britain from America "at three day's notice, especially to join in any expedition going out under Lady Franklin's auspices to the Arctic seas, in search of her gallant husband."
On his return, "Snow was awarded the polar medal. He was convinced that success had been hindered by Forsyth's refusal to go on, and during the following years he vainly importuned the Admiralty to send him out again in command of any vessel, however small, and tried to organize unofficial searches." (ODNB)
Appended to the journal are the ship's complete meteorological records for the full length of the voyage, as well as the crew's scientific and geological observations, and notes on the species of animal and fish encountered.
