MILNE, A.A.

(1882 - 1956)
winnie the pooh and friends

Born in Hampstead London, Alan Alexander Milne, attended a small school run by his father before going up to Cambridge. After graduation Milne joined the staff of Punch magazine, where he contributed various verses and essays and rose to post of assistant editor. Early in his career Milne had some success as a playwright and novelist, writing a well crafted murder mystery, The Red House Mystery.

The birth of his son, Christopher Robin Milne in 1920, led Milne to write a series of children’s poems, which were published in 1924 in a volume entitled When We Were Very Young. The book of poems met with clamorous praise on both sides of the Atlantic and two years later to great acclaim Winnie the Pooh was published, followed by The House at Pooh Corner and Now We Are Six.

As well as the creation of the immortal characters from Hundred Aker Wood Milne adapted Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows for the stage, creating Toad of Toad Hall, whose opening night was attended and warmly received by Kenneth Grahame.

In 1952 Milne suffered from a stroke, which led to his decline and he died in 1956 at the age of 74.
