First edition, deluxe issue, noted on the limitation insert as 'The Collector's Edition'. Number 415 of 675 copies, signed by Priscilla Tolkien. Also signed by John Garth (Tolkien biographer and author of a chapter on Tolkien and the Inklings) to the title page. Original Cialux cloth with pictorial onlay, lettered in white and gilt to the spine, housed in publisher's black presentation box, with an additional envelope housing facsimiles of various original Tolkien items. A fine copy in a fine box.
This work was published to accompany the Bodleian Library's 2018 exhibition of original material relating to Tolkien's fantasy work. The facimile material included with this, but not the standard edition, includes Tolkien's original design for the dustwrapper of The Hobbit, a drawing of the Tower of Orthanc, drawn on the back of an Oxford undergraduate exam paper, a recently discovered leaf from the original manuscript draft of Lord of the Rings (printed on both sides). Two of Tolkien's 'Father Christmas Letters', one with its envelope and a recently discovered map, drawn by Christopher Tolkien with notes in the hand of JRRT, of Middle earth and upon which Pauline Baynes based her 1970 map poster.
