Pasternak's novel about the effects of the 1917 revolution was first published in Italy in 1957 and gained immediate popularity in the west, leading to Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. However, the book's content resulted in a ban in the Soviet Union, not lifted until 1987, resulting in the author being compelled to decline his Nobel Prize.
