The Moon and Sixpence
Heinemann, 1919.
First edition, first issue. Original green cloth, in rare grey printed dustwrapper. A fine copy with the pages tanned as usual in a fine, crisp dustwrapper. An exceptional copy.
One of Maugham's major novels, inspired by the life of Paul Gaugin. As with most major works of this period, it is very scarce in dustwrapper particularly in such a well preserved state.
"Maugham was fascinated by the impact of the arrival of modernism from Europe on an insular British consciousness and the emergence of the cult of the modernist artist-genius... The Moon and Sixpence is at once a satire of Edwardian mores and a Gauguin biography." [Dickson]
