The Birthplace Of Edward The Confessor
Notices of the History and Antiquities of Islip, Oxfordshire The Birthplace Of Edward The Confessor
John Russell Smith, 1849.
Sole edition. One of only fifty copies printed. 8vo. 16pp. Bound into a modern half leather binding with blank supplementary leaves for bulking. A very good copy.
A very rare work by the antiquarian and scholar James Orchard Halliwell (later Halliwell-Phillipps). His notes were "collected chiefly from manuscripts in the Bodleian Library and the British Museum, Dean Vincent's manuscript collections for a history of Islip preserved at the rectory, and the records belonging to the parish. They will be found to comprise new and curious particulars".
