WAGNER'S RING OF THE NIBLUNG
Rhinegold and the Valkyrie With Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods By Richard Wagner, translated into English by Margaret Armour.
Heinemann, 1910.
First editions, two volumes. 4to. Tan buckram with gilt lettering and illustration to cover and spine. Loosely inserted is the notice for the Leicester Galleries exhibition held in October and November 1910, where the watercolours for this book were offered for sale. The first volume has 34 colour plates and the second has 30 colour plates. All the colour illustrations are mounted onto brown art paper under captioned tissue guards. Pictorial endpapers and numerous line drawings in the text. A very good set indeed, bright and attractive, with occasional scattered foxing.
Wagner's interpretation of the Norse Sagas is a perfect vehicle for Rackham's glorious artwork, and in these two books Rackham chose to create something on a grand and prestigious scale. C.S. Lewis wrote "His pictures, which seemed to me then to be the very music made visible, plunged me a few fathoms deeper into my delight. I have seldom coveted anything as I coveted that book" [Surprised by Joy].
