Second American edition. Original blue cloth titled in gilt. Author's presentation copy, inscribed to fellow novelist, Elizabeth Taylor and her husband, on the front endpaper, "Elizabeth and John with love from Elizabeth". A Christmas card inscribed from Bowen to the Elizabeth Taylor laid in. A very good copy with a faded spine and cup ring to upper cover.

Elizabeth Bowen reviewed Taylor's first novel, describing Taylor as "a writer to watch". She went on write positive reviews of her next three novels and was to list Taylor among her favourite living authors. The two corresponded regularly and became great friends, Taylor's novel "The Soul of Kindness" is dedicated to Bowen (Elizabeth Cameron).
Loosely inserted at the rear of the book are a series of newspaper clippings and obituaries of Bowen, each dated in Taylor's hand.
American novelist Anne Tyler described Jane Austen, Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Bowen and Elizabeth Taylor as "soul sisters all".
