Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Rountree moved to England in 1901. He completed many commissions for Little Folks Annuals with brightly coloured ilustrations of animals, especially New World creatures. His two best known works are versions of Lewis Carroll's Alice stories and his Aesop's Fables. Rountree's popularity was short lived and, as work dried up, he died in relative poverty at his home in St. Ives.
