Rodney David Wingfield was a prolific writer of radio crime plays and comedy scripts, but is now generally best known for his crime novels featuring DI Jack Frost which have been successfully adapted for television starring David Jason. In 1972 Macmillan commisioned him to write his first full length crime novel, but rejected his offering. Frost at Christmas was finally published in paperback in Canada in 1984 and was originally intended to be a stand alone novel, with the laconic, chainsmoking detective dying at the end - however the publishers persuaded Wingfield to write a more open ending, which resulted in a further five Frost novels, the last A Killing Frost, being published posthumously.
Wingfield was a modest man, shunning the London publicity scene in favour of a quiet life in Basildon, Essex.
