GOREY, Edward

(1925 - 2000)
“I … conjured them up out of my subconscious and put them in order of ascending peculiarity”

An American writer, illustrator and designer, Gorey’s fascination with the macabre began at an early age when he read Dracula, which inculcated in him an interest in the gothic and surreal.  His work, which he described as “literary nonsense”,  is darkly comic and absurd, full of macabre whimsey and humour.  He wrote and illustrated over 100 small books, ostensibly for children, but his off-kilter view of the world in which terrible things often happen to children, ensures that they belong in a genre of their own.
