1637.
290 x 275mm. Copperplate engraved map by Christopher Saxton, engraved by William Hole for Camden's Britannia, with hand coloring. Embellished with the royal coat of arms and a mannerist title cartouche with a compass rose and mileage scale to the base of the map. Hand coloured highlights and decoration. A near fine map with central fold line.
In 1579, Christopher Saxton became the first person to compile a comprehensive atlas of the counties of England and Wales, producing detailed and decorative maps to illustrate the work. His cartography was hugely influential, being re-engraved by William Hole to accompany the 1607 edition of William Camden's Britannia and subsequently reproduced.
